Squid Wire is a low voltage cabling company which is dedicated to providing solid, reliable technology advice and solutions to support our clients’ needs and growth. We believe in fashioning custom solutions for our customers and we know that a ‘one size fits all’ approach just doesn’t work!
Network technology and the demand for bandwidth is developing so fast, it can confound even those people at the heart of the network and cabling industries. Not long ago, Gigabit Ethernet was seen as an important advance for the capability of a complete LAN. A gigabit-per-second was seen as a huge amount of data, more than enough for an entire LAN. At the time, virtually no application, would need such an amount of information going to the individual desktop.
When making the decision to install fiber connections there are many items to take into consideration. OM1 works very well for todays connectivity, but most installations are expected to last 25 years. If it can be worked into your budget, OM3 is the smartest, long term choice. With network equipment replacement cycle being five years, OM3 will provide you with the greater speeds associated with the new dvices.
At Squid Wire, we will access your needs and make sure you have the proper fiber (multi mode vs single mode), with the needed transmission speeds(OM3 vs. OM1) and the proper terminations to insure a good connection for your network.

Determining Your Current Network Bandwidth Needs
Determining the type of cabling to meet your network’s current bandwidth requirements is not an easy task. Needs vary greatly based on the size of the network, type of traffic and number of users. A small network of 15 workstations will generally have much lower bandwidth requirements than a network that needs to support 100 workstations however, if the 15 users are graphics or multimedia intense, they may have greater requirements than the 100. This is due primarily to the type and volume of the data one can expect in each work environment: a single user transferring a 5-minute high definition video across the network can easily consume more bandwidth than 20 users opening MS Word and Excel files.
Future growth should always be carefully considered. If you expecting growth or a change in business practice (moving to cloud services vs. onsite servers) over the next two years, you should plan for the increase accordingly. To complicate matters further, you must also factor in the type and volume of the data traffic that your network will be supporting.
How do you accurately determine your network bandwidth requirements?
VoIP Berks County PA
There are several ways to analyze network traffic, but the best and most accurate method is to utilize a tool called a network analyzer. It is important to note than when using a network analyzer to monitor your current network’s bandwidth usage, that you sample data over the course of several days (or even weeks), and that you do so throughout different times of the day. Doing this will ensure that you make the most accurate assessment of your network’s bandwidth requirements.
Your Network Environment
Your network environment plays a large part in determining the best type of cabling you should use. While optical fiber offers the fastest possible bandwidth and is the best medium for “future proofing” your network, certain environments are ill suited toward fiber optic installation. Unlike twisted copper mediums like CAT5e or CAT6, optical fiber is prone to transmission problems due to dirt and scratches on the fiber. This can be typical of dirty or dusty mechanical closets, equipment closets, and any rooms that are not clean or friendly to fiber technology. In such cases, twisted copper solutions might be the best way to go. Alternatively, certain environments cause problems with twisted copper mediums. Although CAT5e and CAT6 have much improved noise immunity than their twisted copper predecessors, they are susceptible to high RF (radio frequency) and EMI (electromagnetic interference).

Cat 5 / Cat 6
VoIP Berks County PA
Copper cable will never match the performance of Fiber. CAT6 systems will maintain a price advantage over fiber and in reality, there are many environments where the users will never require the speeds that fiber provides. Utilizing light to transmit information over greater distances than copper, fiber is the perfect medium for connecting multiple locations on a campus, extending data past the CAT5/6 tolerance lengths and when building out the backbone for a building (connecting floors, or large groups to a central hub). Additionally, because there is no electric “signal” there is little to no interference allowing much greater speeds. CAT5 & CAT6 are affected by electromagnetic interference caused by heavy machinery, high voltage currents or magnetic fields generated by large motors, where fiber is not. Additionally, connecting sections of a building where utilizing CAT5 or CAT6 would exceed their tolerances for distance, fiber becomes a necessity.
